When it opens at the end of 2009, the new stadium of the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS) will feature a shining, silvery room, thanks to Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics. The structure's roof will feature 20,000 square meters of SHEERFILL® Architectural Membrane, and 5,000 square meters of SGM-9 architectural mesh.
The project demonstrates Saint-Gobain's capability to produce membrane materials beyond just traditional white. Both products used in the stadium roof are fiberglass materials coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and are colored with a silver pigment to give the roof a metallic appearance.
The silver-topped stadium is being built in New Jersey and will be completed by year end.
